West Buncombe, NC — With extreme fire danger conditions present, residents are urged to take immediate precautions to protect their homes and properties from the threat of wildfires. The combination of dry conditions, high winds, and flammable vegetation significantly increases the risk of fast-moving wildfires.

The West Buncombe Fire Department emphasizes the importance of creating a fire-resistant home by implementing the following safety measures:

  1. Clear Debris from Roof and Gutters—Leaves, pine needles, and other flammable materials can ignite easily when exposed to airborne embers.
  2. Trim Overhanging Branches—To prevent fire spread, keep tree limbs pruned back from roofs, patios, and other structures.
  3. Use Noncombustible Mulch—Replace flammable mulch within five feet of any structure with fire-resistant materials such as river rock or pea gravel.
  4. Maintain Your Lawn—Keep grass mowed to a height of four inches or less and ensure it is properly watered.
  5. Landscape with Fire-Resistant Vegetation—Choose drought-tolerant, fire-resistant plants and maintain their health through proper irrigation.
  6. Remove Dead Vegetation—Clear away all dead or dry plants, leaves, and other flammable materials within 30 feet of structures and propane tanks.
  7. Prune Tree Branches—Remove lower branches from large trees, keeping a clearance of six to ten feet above the ground to prevent fire from spreading upwards.
  8. Space Out Treetops—To reduce fire spread, ensure that trees within 5 to 30 feet of your home have at least 18 feet of separation between their tops.
  9. Reduce Forest Density—Thin out dense vegetation surrounding your property to create a more fire-resistant landscape.
  10. Create a Firebreak—Maintain a driveway at least 12 feet wide to allow emergency vehicles access in case of a fire.

These fire prevention measures are crucial to minimizing the impact of wildfires on residential properties. Homeowners are encouraged to assess their surroundings and take necessary action before conditions worsen.
