Early Saturday morning, our department responded to a house fire that, thankfully, resulted in no injuries. However, two residents were displaced, and the American Red Cross is now providing assistance to help them recover.
Since January 1st, we’ve responded to 14 structure fires, a concerning increase likely tied to the colder temperatures this winter. As the temperatures drop, the risk of home fires often rises due to improper heating methods and other seasonal hazards.
To keep your family and home safe, here are a few crucial tips:
- Install and maintain smoke detectors: Ensure you have working smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
- Create and practice an exit plan: Prepare an emergency escape plan and practice it regularly with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.
- Heat your home safely: Use heating equipment responsibly. Avoid using ovens or other appliances for heating, and keep portable heaters away from flammable materials.
