Learn How to Stay Safe with Lithium-Ion Batteries During Fire Prevention Week
This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focuses on keeping our homes safe as we rely more and more on rechargeable technology. From cell phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily—but they also pose fire risks when not used correctly.
The 2025 FPW™ theme encourages everyone to remember three key steps: Buy, Charge, and Recycle safely.
🔋 1. Buy Only Listed Products
When purchasing any device that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA.
These marks mean the product has been tested and meets important safety standards. Buying uncertified or imitation batteries increases the risk of overheating, fire, or even explosion.
Safety Tip:
Avoid cheap knock-off batteries or chargers—if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
⚡ 2. Charge Devices Safely
Charging correctly is just as important as what you buy.
Always use the cords and chargers that came with your device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. If you need a replacement charger, purchase it directly from the manufacturer or from a brand they approve.
Best Practices for Charging:
-
Place your device on a hard, flat surface while charging—never on a bed, couch, or under a pillow.
-
Don’t overcharge. Unplug your device or remove the battery once it’s fully charged.
-
Never charge unattended, especially overnight.
-
Keep batteries away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
♻️ 3. Recycle Batteries Responsibly
Never throw lithium-ion batteries into the trash or household recycling bins—they can easily spark and cause fires. Instead, recycle them at an approved battery recycling location.
To find a drop-off site near you, visit call2recycle.org. Many hardware stores and community centers also accept used batteries and electronic devices safely.
Pro Tip:
If a device is damaged, bulging, or leaking, handle it carefully and contact your local recycling center for guidance.
🔥 Together, We Can Prevent Fires
By remembering these three simple steps—Buy smart, Charge safely, and Recycle right—you can help prevent dangerous fires and keep your home and family safe.
Let’s all Charge into Fire Safety™ this Fire Prevention Week—and every week after!
