When you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, it’s also a great reminder to check your home’s safety alarms. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential for early warning in case of fire or gas leaks, but they only work if they’re properly maintained.

First, test your alarms by pressing the test button. You should hear a loud, clear beep. If you don’t, replace the batteries or the alarm itself. Even if your alarms are working, replace alkaline batteries twice a year—once in the spring and again in the fall when you adjust your clocks.

Next, remember that alarms have a limited lifespan. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and carbon monoxide alarms every 5 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Taking a few minutes to check and replace your alarms during each time change can save lives. Make it part of your regular routine to ensure your home and family stay safe all year long.
